My process varies depending on the type of visual being rendered – and each pumpkin I carve on! For more recognizable imagery, like logos or famous characters, I'll usually design a custom stencil and adapt it to the shape of the pumpkin so it looks its best on the curved surface, and keep a reference image handy as I carve. For more illustrative or typography-based custom pieces, I often draw a design right onto the pumpkin's surface for some basic guidelines and improvise from there, essentially drawing right onto the pumpkin!
